Lebanon Just Did a Whole Lot More Than Legalize Being Gay →
Western onlookers have a very firm notion of the trajectory along which LGBTQ rights should advance. That trajectory places trans rights as a clear “next step,” something that can only be achieved once the groundwork has been laid by the advancement of the “L,” “G,” and perhaps “B” contingencies (representing lesbian, gay, and bisexual, respectively). But the Lebanese courts are not following that trajectory. The same ruling that decriminalized homosexuality also formally recognized gender variation and codified principles of self-identification.
I understood this wrong when I first read about it, but only because I did not dare to hope for this. And yet..
This makes me very happy.

Lebanon: Being Gay Is Not a Crime Nor Against Nature →
A court in Lebanon has made a historic ruling stating same-sex relations are not “contradicting the laws of nature” and cannot therefore be considered a crime, said a statement only revealed today.
I hate to be that guy, but I’m gonna be that guy.
Firstly, there’s a link in the second paragraph that takes you to the original Arabic article (page 8) that this story is based on. Inside, you’ll find that the case was actually about an intersex person, who was assigned male at birth but in adulthood identified more as a woman. They aren’t gay and aren’t a member of the same sex of the person they had sex with. So the headline’s and the opening paragraph’s talk about “being gay” and “same sex relations” is trans erasure.
Second, the author of the article is Dan Littauer. Littauer is an Israeli Jewish zionist and founder of a website called gaymiddleeast.com. This site started out as a sex tourism source, but since 2009, Littauer has attempted to portray himself as an activist. He’s been the source of several queer-oriented stories about Iran and other Middle Eastern and North African countries that appealed to white gays’ savior complex and that also turned out to be false or speculative at best.
In this case, there seems to be truth to Littauer’s reporting, assuming that the Arabic article is from a reliable source. But please be aware this guy is bad news and shouldn’t be relied upon to report on issues from our region.
But in any case, the judge in this case totally crapped on article 534 and this is still a huge step for the LGBT community in Lebanon.
